There's water in the river

Mountain snows have filled our basin with water and the Missouri River has risen. In the morning fog sneaks off the water and follows the earth's warmth across our front yard. This morning, the mist has been exceptionally heavy and the sky was gray as a ghostly figure and about as wide as the sky. Beautiful in an eerie sort of way. It is after all, October.
My garden's carrots are still stored underground and the chilly nights have for sure sweetened their taste. It's time to plant the garlic and clear out the odds and ends of vegetation remaining. This is a lovely time of year... a lovely time of year.
In fact, my favorite month is October. You never know what you are going to get from the weather, but there are days of warmth and days of cool. There could be snow, or there could be rain. It was chilly enough last night for the moisture to mute the color of the grass to match the sky. Most of the leaves have let go, but colors remain dabbed here and there in the trees.
In about 30 minutes or so the sun will finally rise, it's easy to beat it up these days. It should be an awesome sunrise through the wet filter of morning. I wait here, with my coffee cup in hand to meet the day. Laundry on the line, maybe some fresh bread and vegetables or dinner and a trip to town for one last symposium lecture. It's marvelous to be home.
