Grandma

Some times, the things I cherish seem a bit strange to people around me. Take for instance Grandma.
My Aunt Alice, who in her days has done the best job she can to keep my dad's side of the family together. Somehow over the years, our bubble has burst and we go our separate ways. At least some of us do.
But in the corner of the bay window filled with eastern morning sunshine, my Grandma Kaseman flourishes. We removed the blinds. For one thing, they were flesh-colored orange or pink -- yech. And, for another I cannot think of a more beautiful adornment for a window than Grandma's plant.
Alice has kept her mother-in-law alive by salvaging one of her many plants and propagating it to share with the rest of the family.
In my brick bungalow home in Mandan, there was never enough light for it to survive. But out here it appears to be so happy its spinning off runners like no body's business. It makes me happy to see it growing so well reminding me of both my grandmothers who were so creative and yet so anchored to their lives. Children, farm chores, gardens, canning, cooking, baking, sewing - the things that needed to be completed before they could sit and knit, or crochet or quilt. And, they both completed many projects in their days on earth.
Not too long ago I did an art project with a message about how many wonderful, creative ideas the world has missed because woman have so many other things to do. Did their hearts ache to just throw off their lives and run barefoot in the creek. But, duty calls - each of us I guess.
And so Grandma reminds me every day of how all things good fit into your life. The trick would be to relax and allow God to make them happen...
