“Mom why aren’t the cranberries shaped like a can?”
Well, it’s because they are real cranberries. There are people in the world today that have never had the pleasure of tasting real cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving … wow.
Not only do my cranberries begin their table tour as real berries, I grow my own pumpkin for pie. Well this year I used Lakota squash; it made a smoother richer tasting filling. I did not however tell anyone about that before they had a piece of pie.
My children turned their noses up at my made from scratch pie too.
Until now that is. My daughter couldn’t wait for homemade cranberries. They are wayyyy to easy to make. One cup water, one cup sugar, bring to boil, add berries, simmer for ten minutes, allow to cool at room temperature and then refrigerate.
She makes sandwiches with buns, cranberries and turkey. It is rather a jam of sorts when you consider the ingredients.
While overeating is not good for you; the food yesterday was delish. It was a great day and we all fit around our Walton-sized table. The cat was not too sure of the company and was under the hutch peering out now and then to see if the noisy folks left.
I experimenting with rhubarb and some rogue blueberries I found in the freezer. Not good. We dubbed it Bluebarb and somehow the tastes did not compliment each other like strawberries and rhubarb, but oh well. We did not go hungry – that’s a given.
Monopoly, football and several pots of coffee rounded out the day. We made beaded spiders, bracelets and I passed out mittens to those who fit and were interested… The weather, well, it was chilly out, but nowhere close to the predicated snows storm. I sure hope everyone out there had such a blessed day. I did however mention that I would like to serve dinner for Aid Inc. next year and had at least five folks agree they would like to help. My pregnant daughter preceded her comment with, “do we get to eat?” Of course we do, I said, after the work is done. So, that’s on my radar for next Thanksgiving. It will be a good thing.
