Summer's finally here

Summer doesn't officially begin until after the Fourth of July. Days change quickly after the solstice, but not as quickly as the days following the holiday.
Daylight begins to leak away quickly. I can catch the sun rise in the mornings before work. Storms come and go and days fluctuate between too hot and just right. Clouds provide filters for the sun creating the most magnificent sunsets and very pink sunrises. In fact, we witnessed the most incredible sunset on July 3. It was indescribable and me without my camera.
Flowers bloom and the air becomes scented. Everything is green and gardens are growing like crazy, trying to catch up to what could be deemed the middle of the season.
These are the days I love to do nothing, sit at home and watch the laundry flapping in the breeze, or not; sometimes starched stiff by the sun and no wind.
Cottonwood trees are fully leafed by now and sound like the river running over rocks. I suppose they are talking to the Mighty Missouri that flows not too far from the front of our house.
Our lives are not as slow as they used to be. I remember summers similar to the ones that Jem and Scout experienced in "To Kill A Mockingbird." What ever happened to those kinds of summers?
Once we escaped from the confines of our kitchen, our mom was hard pressed to get us back into the house. Oh, what a beautiful morning....
