Because it seemed like the right thing to do, I experimented a bit in the kitchen today. The deer continue to feast on my garden plants. The least they could do is wait for the fruit, then I would have a fighting chance to get some peppers and tomatoes out here. I'm going to figure out how to beat them. Gardens were late this year and so mine is a bit unorganized. I picked basil this morning when I watered. Our pump is working and we are back to river water, which is much better for plants than treated water. I chopped the basil, garlic, pine nuts and
romano cheese by hand for a bit courser pesto and bought fresh
fettuccine to cook.
I happened upon a bag of wheat berries while looking for my white whole wheat flour so I cooked them also. By the end of the day I had perused enough recipes for wheat berry salad I decided to create a Texas Caviar with them.
Both were delightful and when we get back from a kayak trip up the river, I will post some photos... and tell you about my new love.
